Geography

Introduction

At Key Stage 3, the Geography department follows the National Curriculum focussing upon local knowledge, Europe and the wider world. The department aims to deliver content at the same time as incorporating key geographical skills into the course. Pupils are also taught the skills of enquiry and decision making to encourage curiosity and independent thinking. Pupils are taught about how people interact with the environment and they are also given the opportunity to consider alternative futures for the UK and beyond.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 4, the Geography department teach the brand new AQA 8035 syllabus. This is an exciting course based upon a balanced framework of physical and human geography. It allows students to investigate the link between the two themes, and approach and examine the battles between the man-made and natural worlds.

Fieldwork is a compulsory part of GCSE and the third exam is skills and fieldwork enquiry based. Two trips are run during the two year GCSE course, one of which has a physical geography element and the other a human.

The Geography team aims to provide the best possible geographical learning experience for our students both within and outside of the classroom.

Key Stage 4

Geography at A-Level prepares students for university and beyond. Like at GCSE, the course follows the AQA specification. At the end of the linear course, pupils will take two public examinations, one physical and one human. This will test their knowledge and understanding of topics including; water and carbon cycles, coastal systems, contemporary urban environments and changing places.

A new component at A-Level is an independent fieldwork investigation that allows the pupils to complete their own exciting enquiry into any topic of their choice from the specification.
