I am writing to all parents/carers of students in years 11 and 13 to explain the procedure that the school has taken in regard of the issue of applying for special consideration to the awarding of grades for students with exceptional and mitigating circumstances. In normal pre-COVID times, special consideration is used by schools and colleges as a post-examination adjustment to a candidate’s mark or grade if there has been an unforeseen event or issue that has had an effect on their ability to take an assessment, and thereby detracted from their usual level of attainment.
However, even though the past two years have presented schools and colleges with the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19, it is still important to provide that opportunity whereby a student can contextualize their performance against mitigating circumstances directly related to the pandemic. As you will be aware from my previous correspondence the evidence base that the school is using to award the grades this summer is not only wide-ranging but also has been stretched across the two years of the respective A level, GCSE and/or BTEC course.
The attached form applying for special consideration should only be completed if you believe that your child’s performance has been significantly disadvantaged due to one or more of the reasons outlined in the criteria for Extenuating Covid-19 Circumstances below. If you do not meet any of the criteria then you should not complete the form. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic alone is not a sufficient reason to complete the form as all students have been subjected to the government’s decision to cancel public examinations and use Centre Assessed Grades as a replacement system.
If you submit a form on behalf of your child it should either be handed in directly to Mrs. Wisdish (Progress Coordinator for Year 11) or Dr. Mulligan (Progress Coordinator for Year 13), or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com If you were applying for special consideration for baskets A and B the deadline for submitting year 11and year 13 applications is Monday 10/5/2021; if you are applying for special consideration for basket C assessments then the deadline for both year 11 and year 13 applications is Wednesday 26/5/2021. The Senior Leadership Team, in conjunction with the respective Progress Coordinators and Curriculum Leaders, will consider each application in the week beginning Monday 7/6/2021 before the final submission of the school’s grades to the examination boards. It is imperative that the special consideration process is kept confidential, and there should be no attempt to contact the school to discuss this issue once the application has been submitted. Further details about the results days on Tuesday 10/8/2021 for year 13 students, and Thursday 12/8/2021 for year 11 will be released shortly, and also the procedure for appeals as we are still awaiting clarification from the Department for Education.
