Sixth Form Art & Design

Overview

Art and Design is part of our whole life. Take a look around you and you will see that Art and Design surrounds us. Take for example the clothes and jewellery you wear, the pictures on your walls, the magazines you read, the chairs you sit on, the films you watch, and so on...

There are many industries that could not exist without people trained in Art and Design. The AS/A2 course in Art and Design educates you in the looking and seeing functions of the mind. It trains you to mentally analyse, physically express and communicate what you see.

A course in Art and Design is not only for those who wish to go on to Art College or further education. Students may be looking to take up a career which needs an art background, such as advertising, architecture, or theatre work. Students may have an interest in the subject but not want to take the subject beyond that level.

What does the AS course involve?

The AS qualification is split into two units. The first is a coursework unit. Students produce work on a broad based theme using a range of materials, tools and techniques. Students will develop their ideas working from direct observation, responding to relevant artists. The second unit is an externally set assignment which is taken at the end of the AS course.

What does the A-Level course involve?

The full advanced GCE qualification is made up of the AS plus two units known as A2. The first is a practical coursework unit that incorporates a written element. The second unit is an externally set assignment.

At the end of each year students will exhibit their work in the end of year show. Many students go on to accept places on the local art and design foundation courses.
