DNA Model Making
On Friday 23rd March, a class of Year 10 biologists were busy learning about the structure of DNA, using sweets.
Watson and Crick were the two co-discoverers of the structure of DNA in 1953. We know DNA is a double helix or spiral staircase structure. It is a polymer of repeating units made up of a sugar, a base and a phosphate.
The students use the jelly babies to show the complimentary base pairing between bases A and T and C and G. The strawberry laces are the sugar phosphate backbone and, when completed, the whole structure of two strands can twist into a double helix.
